Pull ups are, by far, the most sought after goal for new members I’ve worked with.

THE DISCONNECT: Most coaches and athletes get stuck in a dogmatic approach to pull ups that makes people afraid to do anything other than band assisted pull ups.

THE QUESTION: Why do we get so close minded in training the pull up that we compromise our own progress?

THE FIX: Reduce the weight by changing the leverage and loading through the pull. Feet on a bench allows for proper vertical pulling pattern and stability. VERY LIGHT band resistance changes the dynamic of the pull by introducing variable resistance, allowing you to learn how to increase strength and power in the vertical pull without extreme loading or compromised positioning. This is a variation even advanced lifters can incorporate to better understand the pattern.

🟢RING ROW FIX🟢
It’s surprisingly easy to exhibit EXCESSIVE range of motion in row movements. Ring rows are notorious for this.

Quick fix: place a thin band across the rings to create a stopping point as well as provide a resisted pull-apart at the end ROM to work some “extra credit” stability.

✅BENCH PRESS FIX✅
An upper body push pattern that requires bracing the core. Of course, we’ve all heard this 1000 times. However, FOOT and HIP position are general oversights for most. 😳

Instant Fix: Feet flat on the floor (or on plates if you have short ‘lil legs like me) WHILE keeping hips off stretch. Meaning, tippy toes on the floor and stretched hips lead to anterior pelvic tilt (APT) and a significant loss of power and overall stability. 🤯 AKA: weak sauce.

The horizontal row is one of the most neglected movement patterns in CrossFit. Ring rows and bent over barbell rows aren’t enough to truly attain an pure row pattern. The prone row removes the lower body out of the equation and allows for a true isolation of the pattern.

All coaches love exercise and sport. That’s a given, not a selling point. It would be a little weird if they didn’t. -
Being a coach is about communication, teamwork, leadership, relationship building, patience, learning, and about 1000 other verbs that come together to educate, inspire and direct INDIVIDUALS through their fitness journey from day 1. To be a coach, these qualities MUST come first. -
